I was so excited about Mo’Nique’s win and then got the shocking news. I am saddened to report that Tre Black, 41, was found dead by a friend in the shower on Sunday. He had a massive heart attack. Tre last worked with Don Cody doing voiceovers on IAPs for Moses Media Inc. A Division of Don Cody Enterprises for the past 5 years. Tre had an illustrious career in radio working at many stations over the last 20 years as well. (click for larger images).

I’m so sorry to hear about Tre. Bo Griffin was only 51. Tre was a young man. We need to take care of ourselves. RIP Tre.
Tre & I were like Magic Johnson & Larry Bird. We had a friendly rivalry, and so many similarities: Both worked in NC at the same time in the late eighties, became the two hottest night time radio personalities in the 1990′s, signature voices for radio stations, both innovators and 41 yrs old.
In 2002 we attempted to launch a syndicated show called “Ego-Maniacs,” because heck… that’s was part of our on air persona. Radio called us back, and we never had a chance to launch…. life.
I am going to miss, Tre.
Love you, Brother.
Rick
wow Rest in Peace
WOW!! Sad!! “Black is Back All in we gotta WIN” I grew up listening to Tre Black here in Detroit. He kept the evenings (WJLB) moving. Never had a chance to meet him though. RIP!!
I am in shock he was so young..from one radio employee to another we will miss his enthusium and great personality. I pray for his family that he left behind and may he R.I.P. Tre was a good person so I know he is up in heaven with my father, brother, and one of my favorite entertainers of all time Michael Jackson.
I’m really saddened by the news. I managed and produced Tre Black for KNOU-FM/New Orleans. Very nice man. Shared his passion for radio as much as anyone could absorb. I will miss you homie. Prayer and comfort to his family and others inspired and befriended along the way.
wow i am sadden by the news of tre i knew tre and when i meet he was a nice guy. i am so sorry about this lost.may God bless family and comfort his family in this time of lost. big e
I’m absolutely floored and speechless! Yet another reason, as Rick would say to launch life NOW because tomorrow is today. Safe passage, Tre.
Wow! Life really doesn’t mean ‘long time.’ Sad, yet we must celebrate a man who went after his passion & as a result, brought so much to our lives. Let’s live while we’re alive! Thanks Tre for adding to our lives. You’re missed already! Pray for his family.

So sad to hear the news. I worked with Tre Black at 92.3 The Beat in Los Angeles. Really cool dude who stacked his chips when he was in Cali! I wish his family and friends the deepest condolences. Peace, The Poetess
Growing up in Detroit Tre Black was an innovator and one of the many influences that continue to help guide my career even today. Although I never met him, my prayers go out to his family and friends!
Tre will really be missed. We were friends and I worked with Tre afew times. He called me up when he wanted to do the remix to R Kelly’s hotel song. I did the track and Tre flipped the words and it was playing on Power the same night. When tre wanted to do something he got it done!! My man hustled!! We had fun times and I will miss you!! My prayers to the family!! Blacklist Radio will live on!!! Drinker stay strong!!!!

While Tre and I never worked together, I knew the impact he had on radio (Detroit Radio in particular) and the talent he possessed was always very apparent. His family and loved ones have my sympathies. He will be missed
Tre black was they hottest night
time jock in the country in the early to mid 90′s and i had the pleasure of working with him at WJLB.He was always inspiring and humble to me and my prayers got out to his family and friends..were going to miss you boy!!!.One Love..still can’t believe your gone
Wow I am floored. This is really sad news. He was a friend, who will be missed dearly. Safe passage Tre.
I met Torey back in 1987…..Man I had the biggest crush on him. I remember calling the radio station where he was working late night in N.C. and I got to talk to him. OMG you would have thought I talked to Michel Jackson. he had the biggest heart and knew how to keep you laughing. Torey and I remained friends from that day on. The last time i spoke with him was about 3 years ago, and it breaks my heart that we didn’t keep in touch like we use to. I love you dude and you will truely be missed by ya girl.
I did not know Tre personally but I always respected his talent and hustle. Radio jocks never die they just live on in another frequency…Peace and Blessings to you Tre…
This is so sad and so scary. He was just 41
I can only echo what many have already said. Tre Black was one of the hottest nighttime jocks in the country. Back in the day,I had the pleasure of working with him in L.A. at 92.3 the Beat in the 90s. He was exciting and fearless! My condelences to his family, friends and fans. Life is so precious. Tre Black lived big! He will be missed and radio is certainly better because Tre Black stopped by.
We were like brothers in 80s. From the grand mixdown on wknc 88.1 to Foxy 107 in durham which was the first commercial mixshow in the triangle and records we did on b boy. I will never forget my brother. Sound, nc
I remember when Tre Black was WaxMaster Torey and he and Dj Soundmachine ruled the airwaves in underground hip-hop back in N.C. My prayers are with his family and friends. I had history with this brother – we shared so many of the same friends yet we never met personally. God be with us all.
Big Joe a.k.a. Cool Joe-Ski
Definitely would like to thank Tre Black for airing Forever Forward first jingle. We just did a jingle for his show Tre & The Source Energy Club on Saturday 3/6/10.
We are so greateful that he was able to enjoy receive the song before he made his transition. We are also pleased to have worked with him on one of his latest ventures.
All Is Well,
Kevin Brightman
I’m sending a prayer up now for the family and friends of Tre Black. The news of his passing caused me to stop and reflect after the shock wore off. I met Tre Black at WQOK in Raleigh, NC when he went by “Wax Master Tory.”. In terms of being a talent he was definitely an inspiration. He believed he was hot (in the most humble of ways – smile) and all had to agree he was very good at what he did. Including hosting a successful midday show, bringing the beats during the mix at 5 show and creating his own music (and more). Tre Black was a true talent and a great friend once upon a time. Wax Master Tory …. R.I.P

Was shocked and saddened to hear about Tre! What a good brother. He made it delightful to work records while I was with Columbia in L.A. We always had a lot of fun in the studio being a part of the “Black List…..Crew!” God bless and rest his soul.
R.I.P. Tre Black. He was such a nice person, always smiling and willing to help. I had just started my radio career in college and Tre brought me up to the studio at Power 105.1 Ever since then we were always cool. Mad love and may he rest in peace. G-D BLESS.
Growing up I was good friends with Troy(Sound Machine) and also got to know Torey. Their show was a big part of any hip hop fan in NC during the 80s. It led to many Mondays where I went to Sanderson tired after listening to them the night before. I am saddened by the news of Torey’s passing. My prayers go to all his family and friends. He brought countless hours of great entertainment to a lot of people.
I do know the family personally, and will pass on all of the wonderful things that were said here. I know they will want to read them. Especially his mother, who is a wonderfully sweet woman, and my heart breaks for her.
I am shocked and extremely saddened by the passing of an incredible performer & human being. We worked together at THE BEAT in LA and he has been one of my favorite people. We stayed in touch (not enough, my fault) after his departure from THE BEAT. Tre was always upbeat and positive. I respect him so much. I am a better man for having known Tre Black. I hope everyone knows that these are not flowery comments posted because someone is gone. Myself and so many others have always felt love for Tre. To Tre’s family and friends, God Bless and stay positive in remembering a man who loved and gave back so much to society.
I was so lucky to hear him on WKNC back in high school. He was the first to drop “Eric B. is President” in Raleigh/Durham. He was inspirational.
I knew Torey ‘way back in the day, at the very beginning of my rap career (I later went on the work with Public Enemy on several projects), and Torey was an inspiration, good friend, and even somewhat of a mentor during that time. I’m still shocked and hurt to hear this, and I regret not calling him up sometime…he would’ve LOVED that, I know it, and it was something I thought I’d get around to doing. You’ll be missed, Brother, you touched a LOT of lives, and you’ll live on through all of us.
babe. I miss you everyday that passes. You are my bestfriend, my love, my compas, I have just read all the wonderful comments from people you have touched. We were going to marry this month, and we never got to do that, but in my heart, I will always be Mrs Torey Drinker. You will always be my heart, I miss you babee, Lis xxx

Wow, Tre…Just hearing the news from a mutual friend of the news. You were not only a great friend, but an inspiration. Biggest sweetheart on the face of the earth. You were looking good, feeling great, and just about to get married. But what can I say. God saw you were angel material and called you home. Rest well, homie…you’ve got alot of work to do (but it should be much easier to change the world from up there.) Your birthday is coming up, and I’ll still celebrate your life. Hey…Be good up there, will ya? Lisa…All my condolences to you, and his family. You lost his body…but not his spirit. Be blessed knowing you have another angel.
Tre was the most amazing and upbeat person I ever met. He always went above and beyond for the people her cared about, and I am honored to have been able to call him a friend. Hearing the news really hurt my heart. I will always remember our talks. You inspired me to follow my dreams and I finally am on that path. Thank you…..
Happy birthday Tre…I know you’re up there partying hard.
Wow! i know I’m late. I met Tre black when I was running KUCR in Riverside, still doing underground hip hop, and he convinced me to go to the major market. His advice to me was a big factor in going for a job in LA. Four month, I later I worked with him at the Beat 92.3 in LA. I was in the community action department, but even after he left he stayed in touch. Again, his advice was that I move to the south and try radio here. Good man…God bless his family.
i just heard last night at Heathers 4th of july party and Teddy Ted (radio personality) gave me the news. i almost fell on the floor. Lisa please get in contact with me. i left you a message on your yahoo email. i had no idea you and tre were to be married. how beautiful and amazing is that? i knew you were special to him, lisa. i knew you and he were right for eachother. and i miss you too lisa. i am devastated. tre black believed in me as a radio personality, he pushed me to succeed with goddess radio back when he was one of the producers for eroticradio live. always thinking outside the box and giving wonderful opportunities to people he belived in. and he believed in me and i am grateful for that. i am grateful for the experience he brought me into. and for letting me know that i can too create my own reality. even with whatever conflicts we had or debates, it always made for a better radio show for us… we used our debates and made questions out of them for the audience to ask about, to talk about, to stimulate thoughts and to think outside the box. he was trully an inspiration. to me and to many others. he will be missed greatly. i will always hear you tre in my mind, pushing me, and reminding me to stay positive, to succeed in whatever i choose to do. i know i will always hear that voice in my head when i need guidance
Thank you, Tre. Goddess Radio Show couldnt have been done without you.
Karina (aka GoddessKitty)
